I'm not so new anymore but back when I was new here's what happened: after three days of "teaching" my sixth grade son at home, I realized our relationship would never recover from an entire year of math worksheets, English lessons, and the feelings of frustration which marked the end of our, admittedly few, days. So this blog documents our first year of unschooling--the good, the bad, and the better--and then it just keeps on going...

Rotorua - Royden's Farm
Our third day in Rotorua was one of the highlights of our trip. Our hosts took us to Royden's Farm, just outside the city. The Royden family has a little slice of paradise they generously share with the rest of us. It was absolutely idyllic.
The first this we saw was a big rope swing.
Farther down the hill there was a homemade water slide
with a deliciously dirt pool of water at the bottom.
The kids had a great time slipping, sliding,
and splashing.
The braver souls went for a float in a beautiful (and very cold!) little stream.
After a picnic lunch we all went for a hike
where we found this water wheel
and a hose where we drank fresh water from the stream.
Jerry had another swing on a rope,
then the kids caught some remarkably tame eels after luring them over with salami.
Our final adventure at the farm was sliding down a grassy slope on cardboard.
Then it was time to hit the road, though I think I could happily stay at Royden's Farm forever!
